Grumpy Old Men
While my younger three children and I were sitting out in the muggy heat this morning waiting for my eldest to finish his golf lesson, I had the opportunity to witness a little irony in the form of two retirees sitting nearby.
These men were both loudly complaining about the new generation of youngsters growing up badly in today's society. Their conversation went something like this.
GOM(grumpy old man)1: "These kids today are terrible."
GOM2: "Got that right. No respect."
GOM1: "They all talk back and wear their pants around their ankles!"
GOM2: "Hmph. And the way they talk. Always talking sh*t to adults."
GOM3: "D**n right! F****n' kids. They need to learn a few manners."
And so it went on.
Oblivious to the extreme irony and vulgarity of their comments (not to mention that they were sitting near a woman and her three young children) they continued in the same vein for several more minutes before moving on to other topics. But their words stayed with me for a while and even now I can't help wondering if they have ever stopped to consider the possibility that the kids in their world have become the way they are because of the behavior they have seen modeled before them.
Perhaps these two grumpy old men should stop and consider that manners, language and consideration for others are all behaviors that are caught rather than taught.
What do you think?
