in our neck of the woods
winter this year
hasn't been too bad
not much snow or ice
and milder temperatures than normal
but still
enough grey skies
chilly winds
and brown fields
to make me ready for all things Summer
the scent of fresh-cut grass
starch blue skies
over lush fields
garden parties
sleeping in

under cotton sheets
tucking away our school books
for a whole three months
lazing by the local lake
watching my children and their friends
craft castles in the sand
skins slippery with sunscreen
squinting under a hot sun
decking out the duff house
in stars and stripes
goin' fishin'
with fingers crossed
hoping for that telltale tug on the line
watching a whole lotta baseball
hitting the local tag sales
searching for treasures
the smell of clean towels
dried by the summer sun

yes indeed
i'm longing
longing
for those sweet lazy days
and counting off the months
(four-to be precise)
that lie between me
and my summertime smile
