fridays unfolded #27

i just have one question

why

are there school supplies in the stores
by the second week of july?

why?

and i'm not just asking a casual 'why'

it's more like that scene from
steel magnolias at the graveyard after shelby
gets buried and sally field looks at herself
in her compact and then realizes
that shelby was right that she does have
a football helmet for hair and then she starts wailing

why why whyyyyyyyyyy!

uh huh

that's pretty much what i felt like
when i walked into walmart last week
and was rudely confronted with all those bins
full of crayons, calculators and compasses

but don't worry

i mostly just screamed 'why' inside my own noggin

though i may have scared a couple of folks away
with that crazed look in my eye

but summer is still here
and i am clutching on to it with both sunburned hands
for as long as i can

even if i will have to pay full price for glue and scissors

but enough about my personal issues

last week on
link up every friday!

you all shared some wonderful
recipes
crafts
tips
decorating projects
and just general

yummyness

i was inspired by ana from a petite cottage
who stretched one pretty sheet into
this lovely duvet and pillow

and bag

and sweet little apron

phew
that's a whole lotta thrifty stitchery

on a similar note
amanda from gratefully growing in grace
crafted this beautiful 'quiet book' for her little one

i am amazed at the colorful pictures
detailed stitches
and fun activities herein

what a lovely way for a small child to learn bible stories

daune (pronounced 'dawn') from cottage in the oaks
revamped her formally boring fireplace
from a zero

to an eleven

and that gorgeous antique mantle?

a gift

finally
in honor of

summer

i have
not one
but two

delightful recipes for strawberry shortcake
to share with you

keri from pressed down, shaken together
posted her grandmother's shortcake recipe

and judy from cranberry morning
shared her own decadent dessert

i don't know about you
but my mouth is watering

yum

a spa birthday party

last week
my baby girl
turned 11 years old

and to celebrate the day
she decided to host a spa-themed party

so i gathered up my supplies:

white towels
white wash cloths
nail polish
cotton balls
cucumber slices
hair bands
nail files
mud masks

and set up

fresh washcloths
later to be moistened and warmed

water bottles personalized by
the birthday girl

when the guests had all arrived
they donned their mud masks
and soothing cucumber slices
and allowed me to photograph them
for posterity

there ensued
a fair amount of giggling

because

those pesky cukes

kept sliding off
and dropping on the floor

no matter

dark circles
and puffy eyes
were no more

after the facials
we moved onto
manicures and pedicures

each girl taking her turn
enjoying a fresh
scented foot bath
which
i'm told

was quite relaxing

later
the birthday cupcakes
were consumed
after the requisite wish making
and candle blowing

little miss
decorated them all by her onsie

finally
gifts were opened
one by one

and the party
drew to its natural conclusion

and after three hours of party prep
hostessing
cleaning up

no one needed a spa day more than

me

fridays unfolded #26

these days
i'm mostly writing my posts
between visits to the local swimming hole
to keep cool during this present heat wave

not that i'm complaining

because every single time
i walk out into the oven that is my backyard
i close my eyes for a moment
and picture myself in february
freezing my buns off

and am instantly happy

and you know what other hot things make me happy?

this diy'd tufted ottoman
crafted by abbie of five day...5 ways
IMG_3859

and some lovely slipcovers made by diane from home sweet homemade

adore the corset-string ties

i'm also crushing on this chalkboard

made by laurie from heaven's walk

doesn't it look sweet in her sunny and light room?

and for my gluten-free friends
i just have to share this pasta-free lasagne recipe
submitted by oxford impressions

and this grain-free, strawberry-rhubarb cobbler
from shanon at food farm health

ok
gotta stop

but you should really
really
make the time to click through many more of last week's
and this week's
wonderful posts

feeling blue

for the last decade

or so

navy blue
has been fairly outre

nearly impossible to find
a scrap of darkest blue
in any shop

every other color

it would seem

was emminently wearable
decidedly fashionable
and totally findable

but thankfully
the moratorium on all things navy
has come to an end

everywhere i look
i see
gorgeous tat
thanks
in no small part
to the newest duchess

who

has a fondness for the hue
and wears it well

and many of the fashion houses
have their models stalking down fall runways
in this lovely color

jean paul gaultier

giambattista valliGiambattista

alexander mcqueen
Photobucket
stella mccartney

gucci
Gucci Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear

and
of course

like all yummy colors

navy is not just for
wearing

it is for living

surrounding ourselves with

velvet lounging

brooding walls

laquered wood

inky sofas
silhouetted
against stark white walls

cozy corners

intimate spaces

even light and airy rooms
can use a bit of deep dark blue

i
for one

love it all
but

does all this boldness give you the blues?
