Found

when we first bought our 1880 victorian
i had dreams of finding long hidden treasures
up in the attic
or down in the bowels of the house

no such luck

if ever there was anything to find
it would seem that previous dwellers had been the fortunate ones

until today

when i was rummaging in the aforementioned bowels
for something i've clean forgotten now

and unearthed these little gems
reposing in a dusty old box

defective?
forgotten
lost?

who cares?

they are now reposing in an old wooden bowl in my nook
(isn't 'nook' a perfect word?)

this was actually my second treasure find

about a week ago i was rootling through some boxes of silverware
that had been handed down to me

and happened across something truly lovely

sterling silver spoons and serving pieces

some are even monogrammed
with the name 'meg'

so sweet and pretty

wouldn't you love to know who meg was?
were the spoons a wedding gift?
did she enjoy shining up those precious pieces too?
did she feed her babies from that cutlery?

i wonder

of course

i hunted out my own silver cream
and got right to work

i don't know why polishing silver is so

satisfying

but it is

now those spoons reside in a little ironstone creamer
on my dining room mantle

what once was lost is now found

  3. Thanks so much for sharing your treasures! That's what so great about old homes...you never know what kind of treasures/stories you will uncover. We've lived in several older homes and one time I had my husband take up a board on the stairs that I was sure had treasure hidden under it. No such luck but its always fun to dream. Love your treasures.

  4. Why, Meg is the oldest sister from "Little Women" of course! That is who she is in my mind. :-) There is something so magical about finding those treasures and the connection to history it brings into our lives. You are inspiring me to go rummage around and see what I can come up with..maybe something I forgot I even had!

  24. Love the silver and door knobs. Have you ever seen that show lost in the attic, or something like that...but it was about that very same topic, finding things in the walls, secrete treasures, notes...it was so cool. Thanks for your comment and words of wisdom shared on my post.

  27. Oh wow! I'd love to find some stuff like that. Unfortunately, my house was built in 2000 so that's not gonna happen. When I come across something old at the thrift store and take it home with me, I do wonder about who used it way back when it was new. Such a fun thing to do. Oh, I love the word "nook" too!

Thanks for linking up last week to Favorite Things Friday @ The Speckled Dog. Hope you'll come back this week!

  28. I am almost beside myself. I would squeal with delight if I unearthed such treasures. I wanted to live in a Victorian so badly when we moved...almost, but not quite. It was the height of the market and wooo-whoo it was pricey. The town I live in has some statistic with Victorians as well...I think it may be the most Victorians per capita than anywhere else in America. Just gorgeous.

  29. Oh girl..you found some lovely old treasures! I go on junkin' trips just to look for doorknobs that you were blessed enough to find in your home! :) What a fun find! (and the silverware too!) Just wonderful!
It's fine that you linked up twice...the more the merrier I always say! (and your closets look great too!) :)
Hope you have a great day and I hope you end up finding more treasures in your lovely home!
    Hugs
