Frugal Wall Art

i'm cheap

you should just know that
right now

so when i noticed the
huge blankety blank wall
in my dining room

i pondered over
various ideas for how to decorate it

i thought of large framed silhouettes of my 4 kids
but frames were too expensive

a vintage school map
but couldn't find any

lovely huge piece
of original artwork
by renowned artist
but

duh

so i was stumped

then we attended a friend's wedding and inspiration struck

cue angels singing

you know those matted photos that guests can sign instead of a guestbook?

bingo

i decided to make my big blank wall
a big graphic guestbook

i pulled out my sharpie and handed it to the first guest
and big brother
who was appalled at the idea of permanently marking my freshly painted wall
and nearly refused outright

but i insisted
and i am persuasive
and he placed his john hancock
front and center

others followed
more enthusiastically

what fun to write on your walls !
they shouted gleefully

and in next to no time at all we had ourselves a beautiful wall of autographs

i love it.
the hubs loves it
(no small feat)

and our friends adore it.

best of all?

totally free graphic art

which is good
because

i'm cheap

  4. Thanks Nikki and Paige. Yup, it took a bit of persuasion to coerce my big bro into marking up my nice clean wall....but then, I can be very persuasive when I want to be!

    Thanks for the comments girls!

  6. Thanks Angie. Yes, my kids love it, but I have to supervise their friends when they sign...otherwise I'll have scribble scrabble all over the place!

  8. What a cute idea!

I think everyone loves giving up their autograph when it's not for paying a bill!

Now, how do you keep the kids from writing on OTHER walls. That is my biggest struggle some days. My girls love to color on the walls.

  9. What a great idea! This would be hard to get away with as a renter - perhaps putting up a white poster board on the wall instead of the actual wall..hmmm...ideas ideas...
Stopping by from SITS to say hi

  12. Nicole-yes, everyone loves signing The Wall although some are nervous that they'll mess up. And my kids are pretty much old enough that they understand not to write on anything else.

Katie-You could use a huge canvas, maybe an old painting found at a tag sale. Just gesso it over and then you can keep it when you move.

Erin and Jill-Thanks, not so brave. I can always paint over it if I choose. But I don't think I will b/c I adore it.

  15. Jenn-thanks for the comment. I even think you could use a series of canvases. When one fills up, add another and display them like artwork. That would look great!

  17. What a fabulous idea! We're in the military, so we rent most of the time, but I love this concept! I might have to do a version of it, maybe a poster frame, no glass so it can be added to as we have guests.

  18. I adore the signature idea. We have a mini hall/cubby area leading from the breakfast nook into our bedroom and it's blank . . . I wonder if DH would allow me to do this!? Hmmm...

  19. Stopping by from Wheelchair Mommy... I LOVE this idea. My hubby would NEVER go for it though. Ug. It looks terrific!

  20. the nice thing
    about this art
    is that
    if you or your hubs
    doesn't like it

you can just paint over it!
